Participants will spend the majority of their week on Project Canaan. You will kick off your experience with a complete tour of Project Canaan: our 2500-acre fully operational farm and children’s home. Each year additional buildings and initiatives are incorporated, and new visitors as well as return visitors get to experience an up-close look at the growth that has occurred.  You will be hosted by our local managers at each location and get to hear some of their stories along the way.

What We’ll Be Doing

We plan to spend the week preparing for Christmas celebrations and continuing some traditions we have created over the years. You may be asked to decorate, wrap gifts, or lead/assist with a pre-planned activity.  The team will also visit a local homestead to deliver food and clothing and encourage the family living there. One day will be spent participating in a children’s feeding program at one of our rural church partners, delivering and serving food and playing with the children they serve. You may also have the opportunity to serve in other capacities as needed on Project Canaan.  We will be in close communication with all travelers and give frequent updates as we adapt our itinerary so you are well prepared, and well informed!

Shopping & Local Trips

The Khutsala™ Artisan shop on Project Canaan will be open multiple times throughout the week, and you will be able to stock up on our beautiful Khutsala and Kufundza products.  Our jewelry, Christmas ornaments, charcuterie boards, and many other home items are all handmade on site, providing employment for our neighboring communities, which allows them to in turn provide for their families (sometimes up to 7 people in each household).  All profits are used to further our mission of self-sustainability and to provide care for our more than 400+ children living on Project Canaan. These make great gifts or souvenirs, and each purchase truly makes an impact! You will have one day “off property” where you will visit a local game drive.

Each participant will be encouraged to maintain a group mindset throughout your trip. We want to ensure that everyone has a great experience, and we make preparations based on what is best for the group. As Project Canaan grows, specifically our children’s campus, we must make modifications that are going to best serve those on and off the property, as well as provide consistency and structure for the schedules our staff has worked so diligently to put in place.  We  appreciate your understanding as we strive to improve your trip experience!

Travel Details & Costs

All travelers must comply with international travel restrictions and with the operational requirements mandated by Project Canaan.

The trip cost will include the ground costs of $2,270 PLUS the airline ticket cost if you are booking your ticket through Heart for Africa.  The total trip cost below reflects round trip airfare from Atlanta to Johannesburg. For flights through another city, please contact our Trip Coordinator, Tricia Ford at tricia@heartforafrica.org for costs.

Limited to 25 Volunteers. We must have a minimum of 10 people register for this trip. If we do not have 10 people register for this trip, we will have to cancel. 

*Please note:  The cost with airfare is based on our blocked seating rate with the airlines.  Volunteers must register with air and have met the second funding deadline of $3,000 by August 16th, 2024 in order to get the blocked seating rate.  For registrations after this date, we will book individual tickets at the regular published fare at that time.  If we do not have more than ten people sign up with airfare by our block seating deadline, we cannot keep our block and we will need to book individual tickets.  The total trip cost my change according to airline rates at that time.

Self Bookers (No airfare through Heart for Africa)

If you are self-booking your airfare, you will need to coordinate your arrival into Johannesburg, South Africa on the same day as the rest of the team and your departure from Johannesburg, SA back to North America no earlier than 8:00PM on the same day as the rest of the team. Please review your proposed flight itinerary with our Trip Coordinator, Tricia Ford, prior to making your flight purchase at tricia@heartforafrica.org.

Please include any notes for Heart for Africa in the “I’m traveling with:” field on the registration form.

The costs of the trips include lodging, meals, supplies, ground transportation, travel medical insurance, administrative fees and airfare (if you have elected for Heart for Africa to arrange the air portion of your trip). Due to cost and exchange rate adjustments, any remaining funds will go toward general support of the mission.
