Becoming an Ambassador to help fight poverty

Our first trip with Heart for Africa was in the fall of 2007, and we worked at a children’s home in Kenya. We made several trips with Heart for Africa to Kenya. We were very excited when Heart for Africa was able to purchase the land in Swaziland, now Eswatini. In May 2013, we were part of a small design team with the task of creating items that could be made for sale for the purpose of providing employment to people in the community as well as providing funds to support the babies at the El Roi baby home.

Our next trip served the purpose of sewing curtains for Emseni 1 and The Oasis. We made 2 other trips specifically to sew curtains for the new dormitories being built. On each trip, it was so encouraging and inspiring to hear Janine’s thoughts, plans, and hopes for the future of Project Canaan.

I can still remember riding in Janine’s car, and her sharing the vision of having Khutsala Ambassadors. These would be those who would commit to direct sales of the products that were made at Khutsala Artisans. We committed to sell ornaments in the first year of ambassadors. At first, the task was daunting! But with each year, and a lot of prayer, venues have opened up for us to sell the ornaments! We have sold the ornaments at tennis matches, teachers’ lounges, online to friends, and a Giving Market at our school ( a market specifically for ministries to sell items that support the ministry). It is amazing how the people at our school look forward to the day that we sell at The Giving Market. The children get so excited to buy the beaded animals, keychains, ornaments, and other gifts to be given at Christmas.

My daughter has put them in her office at work, and fellow workers stop by and purchase the items. This year due to Covid, no one was in an office! So, she posted the items in an email to her coworkers. She sold almost $1500 of items by just making her friends aware of the items. One thing that has really helped us to sell was using “Square” to be able to accept credit cards.

When we receive the Khutsala items that we are going to sell, I always pray and ask that God would send people to love the items.

I specifically pray that God would send someone to purchase the Nativity Scene and the Noah’s Ark since they are such large items, and the profit from their sale would bless so many children.

So this year, before The Giving Market, I prayed for God to send buyers for these items.  The day before the sale, one of our teachers’ assistants text me that she wanted to purchase the Nativity Scene. She said she had had it on her heart since last year! I was moved to tears because my prayers were answered.

The next day at The Giving Market, one of our 2nd grade students and his mother were shopping at our Heart for Africa table. The young boy kept going to the Noah’s Ark. We tried showing him the smaller beaded animals, but he was drawn to the Noah’s Ark. His Mom purchased it for him. Again, my heart was so excited that God had answered my prayers! This sweet little boy sat on a bench at the Market and played with the Noah’s Ark for over an hour. He made the animals into a parade 2 by 2 entering the ark, he took them out of the ark, and continued to play with the largest smile on his face. I was so blessed by the happiness that he had with the ark!

I would like to encourage you to consider being an ambassador.  Not only are you selling the items that keeps people employed at Khutsala, funds raised help support the children, you are making others aware of Heart for Africa and their mission, and you will be truly blessed!
